he Edo period, wandering-style Japanese garden will change every season and welcome you here every single time.

This wandering-style Japanese garden has over 300 years of history.

The wandering-style Japanese garden provides a different sort of enjoyment for every season. This is an important cultural heritage site,
being the meeting place of Akamatsu, Saigo, Kido and Okubo as written by Ryotaro Shiba.

Our hospitality is passed down from generation to generation.

What did the revolutionaries of the Meiji Restoration speak at that day?
Ever since our founding during the Edo period, the space we occupy has seen many significant historical events.
The hospitality of Matsudaya is focused on "providing individualized hospitality to each and every guest" ever since our founding.
We value the voices from our guests and will continually improve upon our service so that our guests can enjoy their stay.

We have the historical main building as well as a new building that is great for families and large groups.

  • The sukiya-zukuri (architectural style) overlooks the wandering-style Japanese garden.
  • Guestrooms can be used according to your own situation.

Enjoy the historic atmosphere as you relax and see the wandering-style Japanese garden.

The wooden two story structure in the sukiya-zukuri was built in the Taisho period. The garden can be seen from the guestrooms as well.

The atmosphere of the buildings maintains that of the era of the late Tokugawa Shogunate.
You will be impressed as if you are a part of history.
The guestroom baths in the main building have free-flowing water from the hotsprings. Some guestrooms also have open-air baths.
By popular demand, we prepared a Japanese-Western room with a bed.

We bring you many different menus with our cuisine, using local ingredients for each season.

Surrounded by the mountains and sea, Yamaguchi has many different seasonal ingredients that can satisfy your palate.

The Seto Inland Sea or off the coast of the Sea of Japan,
the varied terrain and weather of the Chugoku Mountains provide many different local specialties and agricultural products.
Enjoy the seasonal specialties with local ingredients sourced directly from Yamaguchi.

Tastes of the four seasons for the discerning palate.

Spring: The "red tilefish" is eaten as an ingredient of upper-class cuisine. It is prized in Kyoto where it is called "Guji."
Summer: The "pike conger" is in season during the summer where it is said that it becomes more delicious after absorbing the water from the rainy season.
Autumn: The kuruma prawn is most beautiful and delicious during autumn. It is considered to be the king of all shrimp.
Winter: The prefectural fish of Yamaguchi, the fugu represents the best flavors of winter.
